Golfers will have their pick of three different championship courses at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort, located roughly twenty minutes northwest of downtown Las Vegas. With the Wolf, Sun Mountain, and Snow Mountain courses, golfers will enjoy the only Pete Dye-designed courses in Nevada, as well as some widely varied golf that includes ample water features, rolling terrain, and stunning mountain vistas.
Snow Mountain is the original course at Paiute, and according to some, it’s still the best. The 7,164-yard course features a progressive layout with wide rye grass fairways, traditional Dye railroad tie-decorated bunkers, and dogleg finishing holes. Out of the three courses at Paiute, Snow incorporates the natural Nevada landscape the most with the exception of its ample water hazards – water plays into seven of the holes at Snow, from a peninsula green on the 16th hole to an 18th hole that seems to wrap itself around a lake.
The Sun Mountain course is much tamer and considered a “kinder, gentler” Pete Dye course. Golfers will be charmed by the natural rolling terrain, the course’s isolated location within the resort, and the beautiful mountain backdrop, which makes the course seem clear even on a cloudy day. Easily the most scenic of the three courses, Sun features glistening blue lakes and lush Joshua trees, and players who are new to the game or playing in groups will find it provides a pleasant and not punishing game of golf.
By contrast, the Wolf course is the most difficult of the three courses, as well as the longest course in Nevada at 7,604 yards. However, five tee options make the course a little more accessible to players of varying skill levels. The newest layout at Paiute, the Wolf will have any player feeling humbled with its constant swales, bunkers, arroyos, and undulating greens and fairways that will play with your ball and your patience. Try not to get too frustrated on the par-3 15th hole, an island green where half the challenge is simply getting on the green. Regardless of how badly one plays, however, Wolf’s beautiful mountain views serve as a constant comfort.
If you’ve taken a beating from any of the three courses, retreat to Paiute’s lovely 50,000 square-foot clubhouse. Players can relax in the 3,800 square foot restaurant and lounge, which features a fireplace area and a separate tobacco room for indulging in a cigar.
